A big problem that I am noticing in my classroom is the student's ability to say what they are to do, but not actually showing that they CAN do it. In our classroom, we try to implement being a good listener into the entire day. The students know that there are three things that we look for when we are looking for good listeners: 1)eye contact, 2)lips closed, and 3)think. They know these three things inside and out, but they are having a hard time showing them to us. My challenge right now is trying to get the students to understand that simply saying a rule doesn't mean that it is being followed. I'm thinking that maybe modeling the wrong behaviors could be a good way to get my point accross, but is it good to model the wrong behaviors? Will this give them more ideas for wrong things they can do in the classroom?
I think that it is a good idea to show or role play the wrong way to be a good listener and have the students pick out why you were being a bad listener. Maybe you and your host teacher could show a good listener vs. bad listener and see if the students can pick out what the "bad listener" did wrong. In second grade we did this to show how they should be "reading silently" and it seemed to work. I have also heard of having the students showing how to and how not to so they are physically involved in showing you how to do the desired behavior.
